How it works
- Check your phone. It needs to be unlocked and support eSIM. Check your phone
- Buy and install before you leave. We email you a link. Open it on the phone you’re taking and tap Install on this phone, or scan the QR code from another screen.
- Switch it on when you land. In your SIM settings, use the Battuvo eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Keep roaming off on your home line to avoid your carrier’s fees.
- Need more? Open the same link to add data or days.
NTT docomo plans: On Android, set the APN (mobile data setting) to vmobile.jp by hand before data works. On iPhone, you only need to set it to use hotspot.
Which network?
The lowest prices are on NTT docomo, Japan’s largest network. On Android, those plans need one setting, explained above. Plans on KDDI and SoftBank cost a little more and work without it.
How much data?
Maps, train times, translation and messaging use about half a gigabyte a day. Video and laptop use take much more, so download shows and maps over Wi-Fi.
Questions
Will I get a Japanese phone number?
No. These plans are data only. Calling and messaging apps such as WhatsApp, LINE and FaceTime work over the data.
Can I share data with my laptop?
Yes. Hotspot is included. On iPhone with an NTT docomo plan, set the APN to vmobile.jp under Personal Hotspot first.
When should I install it?
Before you leave, while you have Wi-Fi. The plan starts when it first connects to a network in Japan, so installing early doesn’t use any days.
Is a 7-day plan enough for a two-week trip?
No. A plan ends when its days run out, even if data is left. Choose a 30-day plan for trips longer than a week.
